Preparing Standby Cadets from Mariners for Shipboard Integration

May 5, 2025 – Manila

Unlad Ship Manning and Management Corp. hosted a pre-embarkation orientation and readiness session for a select group of standby cadets under its Cadetship Program. General Manager Regina Eliza V. Jimenez led the session, guiding the cadets through the essential expectations and preparations needed before joining their assigned vessels.

The cadets, who graduated from Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation, are preparing to serve as galleyhands. During the session, Ms. Jimenez introduced the fundamentals of acculturation, emphasizing the importance of understanding the chain of command, following policies and protocols, and adapting to life within multinational crews on foreign-flagged vessels.

She also outlined what cadets should expect during their first embarkation, including daily duties, proper logbook documentation, onboard conduct, and reporting structures. She encouraged the cadets to uphold professionalism, resilience, and a strong work ethic as they work toward eventually joining the global maritime industry.

To enhance engagement and assess readiness, the Unlad team organized interactive activities that tested the cadets’ English proficiencymental and physical fitness—critical components of shipboard performance. The cadets participated in role-play exercises, instruction taking, and light fitness tasks that simulated real-life scenarios onboard. These activities not only challenged their responsiveness and communication but also fostered camaraderie and teamwork.

Cadets Melbon Genorga, Bryan Barrion, Dominique Amaro, Krystoff Corpuz, Oscar Bien, Raffy Flores, Hubert Carpio, Rico Melendres, Raffy Beason, and Jhoem Daz actively participated in the session. Each cadet demonstrated enthusiasm, professionalism, and a clear readiness to take on their first sea assignment.

Through initiatives like this, Unlad continues to strengthen its Cadetship Program—not only by securing sea-time opportunities for future officers, but also by shaping them into competent, confident, and globally adaptable seafarers. This orientation reaffirmed the company’s commitment to preparing young Filipino maritime professionals for success at sea.
